Can thermal cameras see through walls?
A plain-English guide to surface temperature, hidden defects and common myths.
Short answer
Thermal cameras normally measure infrared energy from the visible surface. Hidden pipes, voids or insulation may indirectly change that surface temperature, but the camera does not provide X-ray vision.

- Interpret the visible surface pattern first.
- Look for building or plumbing routes that could explain it.
- Repeat under different operating conditions.

- Claiming the image identifies an object behind a wall
- Ignoring studs and thermal bridges

Choosing a camera for this job
Start with native IR resolution, thermal sensitivity, field of view and focus. Close electronics work often needs macro or manual focus; broad building scans benefit from a useful field of view and enough native pixels to resolve an anomaly from a safe distance. Compatibility and reporting workflow matter as much as the headline detector specification.
